Perfect isolation does not always guarantee perfect lash retention.

One of the biggest misconceptions in the eyelash extension industry is that retention problems automatically mean poor application technique. In reality, even experienced lash artists can struggle with retention when room dynamics, adhesive handling, lash preparation, or client aftercare are not fully optimized.

Professional lash retention is a system. Humidity, temperature, adhesive workability, lash diameter, attachment pressure, and environmental consistency all affect how well eyelash extensions bond to the natural lash.

What Is Considered Healthy Lash Retention?

Healthy eyelash extension retention typically means:

  • 3–4 week fills
  • Extensions remaining attached throughout the natural lash growth cycle
  • Minimal premature shedding
  • Strong seamless attachment
  • Consistent retention between appointments

If extensions are falling off within days, especially without the natural lash attached, there is usually a breakdown somewhere in the retention process.

Room Dynamics Matter More Than Most Lash Artists Realize

Professional lash adhesives are chemicals with a curing process. That means your room environment directly affects how your adhesive performs during application.

Signs Your Humidity or Temperature Is Affecting Lash Retention

  • Adhesive becoming thick or stringy

These are often environmental issues, not adhesive defects.

Ideal Lash Room Conditions for Professional Adhesive Performance

  • Ideal humidity: 45–65%
  • Ideal temperature: 68–72 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Maintain consistent humidity and temperature 24 hours a day
  • Replace air filters every 6 months
  • Avoid lashing directly under vents
  • Keep adhesive away from sunlight, moisture, heat, and cold
  • Never store lash adhesive in the refrigerator

Refrigerating adhesive can ruin the chemical balance and negatively affect curing performance.

If you work inside a nail salon or an environment with heavy airborne chemicals, investing in an air purifier can significantly improve adhesive consistency. If you do not have control over your salon temperature or humidity, speak with your salon manager. Consistency throughout both the day and overnight hours is extremely important for adhesive stability.

The Most Common Lash Retention Mistakes

  • Using conditioner at the end of the appointment instead of only at the beginning
  • Failing to rinse lashes with saline after cleansing
  • Wetting lashes immediately after the appointment
  • Using extensions that are too thick for the natural lash
  • Working on porous or uneven adhesive surfaces
  • Not re-dropping adhesive frequently enough
  • Improper base-to-base attachment

With The Lashe adhesives, a properly attached extension should remain stable for the full life cycle of the natural lash. If lashes are popping off from the back of the attachment point, this usually indicates improper seamless connection during application.

Are Lash Primers Necessary?

No. At The Lashe, we do not recommend lash primers before eyelash extension application. Most lash primers contain alcohol as a primary ingredient. Alcohol can over-strip the natural lash, increase irritation, and interfere with achieving a complete bond between the extension and natural lash.

Instead, lashes should first be thoroughly cleansed and then rinsed with saline solution only. Saline naturally dehydrates the natural lash while remaining pH balanced for the eye area. No primers should be used.

When the natural lash is properly cleansed and dehydrated, the extension should attach immediately, almost like a magnet.

Proper Adhesive Handling Is Critical for Lash Retention

  • Dip the extension from the side of the adhesive drop
  • Use a quick dip only
  • Do not overwork the adhesive
  • Never dip from the top of the adhesive drop
  • Re-drop adhesive every 15–20 minutes
  • Use only a flat non-porous surface

Dipping from the top breaks the adhesive film and can cause stringiness, oxidation, poor workability, and inconsistent attachment. Porous surfaces such as jade stones and certain plastics may also affect adhesive stability.

Lash Thickness Directly Affects Retention

Using extensions that are too heavy is one of the fastest ways to create poor retention. At The Lashe, we generally recommend 0.15mm at the base for most applications. Some 0.20mm extensions may work depending on natural lash strength.

However, excessively heavy diameters such as 0.25mm, 0.30mm, and 0.35mm can place too much stress on the natural lash and negatively affect retention. The extension should never exceed the diameter of the natural lash itself.

Lash Stickies Can Also Affect Retention

Stickies are not just uncomfortable for clients. They can also interfere with retention and lash health.

  • Using too much adhesive
  • Uneven attachment spacing
  • Opening isolation tweezers too wide
  • Improper separation during attachment

Sensitive Clients Need a Different Adhesive Approach

Some clients naturally experience more watering, irritation, or sensitivity during lash appointments. Excessive tearing can interfere with adhesive curing and attachment consistency.

Every summer, I start hearing the same question from lash artists: “Why did my adhesive suddenly stop working?”

Most of the time, the adhesive did not suddenly change. The environment changed.

Summer brings higher humidity, warmer temperatures, air-conditioning changes, sunscreen, perspiration, travel, swimming, and clients arriving with more oil or residue on the skin and lashes. All of these factors can affect lash retention, adhesive behavior, and the way extensions attach to the natural lash.

After working with professional lash adhesives since 2007, I have learned that summer does not usually create brand-new retention problems. It exposes small inconsistencies that may have been easier to miss during the rest of the year.

Why Summer Humidity Affects Lash Adhesive

Professional eyelash extension adhesive is affected by moisture in the air. Humidity helps adhesive cure. When humidity is too low, the adhesive may cure too slowly. When humidity is too high, the adhesive may begin curing too quickly before the extension has made a complete, seamless attachment to the natural lash.

This is why a lash artist may feel like the adhesive is drying faster in July than it did in March. The same adhesive can feel very different when room humidity, temperature, airflow, and client prep have changed.

At The Lashe, we generally recommend keeping the lash room around 68–72 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity around 45–65% for consistent professional adhesive performance. The exact feel will still depend on the artist’s speed, adhesive drop freshness, air movement, and how clean the natural lashes are before application.

Humidity and Temperature Must Be Read Together

One mistake I see often is focusing only on the humidity number. Humidity matters, but temperature matters too.

When the room is warmer, adhesive can feel thinner and behave differently. When air conditioning is blowing directly across the lash bed, adhesive may cure unevenly or feel inconsistent. When humidity rises but the room temperature also changes throughout the day, the adhesive may feel different from one appointment to the next.

Your lash room is a complete environment. A hygrometer is helpful, but it does not replace watching how the adhesive behaves in real time.

Watch the Adhesive, Not Just the Meter

Your adhesive often tells you what is happening before the meter does.

During summer, pay attention to signs such as:

  • Adhesive becoming stringy
  • Adhesive becoming watery or overly thin
  • Adhesive thickening too quickly
  • Poor lash “grab”
  • Fans collapsing during volume work
  • Carbon separation
  • Excessive stickies
  • Extensions popping off early
  • Inconsistent retention from client to client

These signs do not automatically mean the adhesive is defective. They are often a signal that the environment, adhesive handling, lash prep, or attachment needs to be adjusted.

Summer Starts Before the Client Walks In

One of the biggest summer retention mistakes is assuming the problem begins with the adhesive bottle. Often, the problem begins with what is already on the natural lashes before the appointment starts.

In summer, clients may arrive with sunscreen, perspiration, facial oils, makeup residue, skincare, or environmental debris around the eye area. Even if the lashes look clean, the bonding surface may not be properly prepared.

This is why I never skip lash preparation.

Proper Lash Preparation Is Even More Important in Summer

If the lashes are clean and free of makeup, saturate the natural lashes with saline using two oval or pointed cotton swabs. Saline naturally dehydrates the natural lash while remaining pH balanced for the eye area.

If the lashes are not completely clean, cleanse first with an oil-free cleanser, such as The Lashe Cleanser, and then rinse thoroughly with saline twice. I recommend using two sets of cotton swabs so the cleanser is fully removed before the saline dehydrates the natural eyelashes.

Skipping this step is like applying makeup to a soapy face. Even if the application technique is strong, the surface is not properly prepared for a clean bond.

The Lashe recommendation: Absolutely no primer. Proper cleansing followed by saline preparation creates a cleaner, more consistent bonding surface without adding unnecessary product exposure around the eye area.

Too-Thick Extensions Can Make Summer Retention Worse

Summer retention issues are not always caused by humidity or adhesive. Sometimes the extensions are simply too heavy for the natural lashes.

The extension used should not be larger than the diameter of the natural lash. When an extension is too thick or too heavy, it places unnecessary stress on the natural lash and the attachment point. During summer, when clients are sweating more, swimming, traveling, wearing sunscreen, or cleansing inconsistently, that stress may become more noticeable.

Proper extension selection matters. A lighter, better-matched extension can often retain more beautifully than a heavier extension that overwhelms the natural lash.

Base-to-Base Contact Is Critical

If lashes are popping off from the back of the attachment point, that is usually a sign that they were not attached properly during application.

With The Lashe adhesives, if the extension is seamlessly attached base-to-base, it should remain secure for the life cycle of the natural lash. If the extension releases from the back, the bond was likely never fully established.

Summer can make this more obvious because adhesive may begin curing faster in higher humidity. The artist may think the extension attached, but if the adhesive cured before the base made a complete connection, retention can suffer later.

Air Conditioning Can Also Affect Adhesive

In summer, many salons rely heavily on air conditioning. Air conditioning can help control temperature, but direct airflow across the adhesive drop or lash bed can create inconsistent curing.

Avoid lashing directly under vents or fans. Keep the adhesive drop protected from direct airflow, and monitor whether one side of the room feels cooler, drier, or more humid than another. Small airflow changes can create big differences in adhesive behavior.

Change Adhesive Drops More Frequently

In warmer or more humid conditions, adhesive drops may need to be replaced more often. A drop that performed well for 20 minutes in one season may not behave the same way during summer.

If the adhesive becomes thick, stringy, separated, or inconsistent, replace the drop. Do not try to force old adhesive to perform. Fresh adhesive drops support cleaner pickup, smoother placement, and more predictable retention.

Client Aftercare Changes in Summer

Summer clients often live differently. They sweat more, swim more, travel more, use more sunscreen, spend more time outdoors, and may cleanse less consistently while away from home.

All of this can affect retention. Lash artists should remind clients to keep extensions clean, avoid oil-heavy products around the eye area, rinse after saltwater or chlorine, and avoid rubbing or sleeping face-down.

Do You Need a Different Adhesive for Summer?

Not always. Before changing adhesives, evaluate the full system: humidity, temperature, airflow, adhesive drop age, lash prep, extension diameter, attachment quality, and client aftercare.

After working in the professional lash industry since 2007, I can confidently say that retention is never controlled by one single factor. Strong retention comes from a system: adhesive performance, room conditions, lash preparation, extension quality, application speed, placement, styling, and client aftercare all have to support one another.

At The Lashe, our products are developed for professional use under controlled salon conditions, but the product alone cannot create retention. The artist still has to understand how the environment and application process influence the bond.

Humidity directly supports the curing process of professional lash adhesive, but humidity should never be evaluated by itself. Temperature, airflow, heating, air conditioning, and the artist’s speed all affect how the adhesive behaves.

At The Lashe, we generally recommend maintaining humidity around 40–60% and room temperature around 68–72 degrees Fahrenheit. The goal is not simply to reach a number. The goal is to maintain a stable environment throughout the day.

When Humidity Is Too Low

In low humidity, adhesive may cure too slowly. The extension can shift before the bond is complete, the attachment may feel weak, and the artist may struggle to achieve that immediate magnetic grab.

When Humidity Is Too High

In high humidity, adhesive may begin curing too quickly. If the adhesive starts setting before the extension makes a complete connection to the natural lash, the result can be a brittle or incomplete bond.

Direct airflow from vents and fans can also create uneven curing, even when the hygrometer reading appears acceptable.

Application Speed Must Match Adhesive Speed

Every artist works at a different pace. A faster adhesive is not automatically a better adhesive if it cures before the extension is placed correctly.

If the adhesive is too fast for the artist:

  • The extension may not wrap or connect fully
  • The bond may form before placement is complete
  • Retention may fail even though the attachment looks correct

If the adhesive is too slow:

  • The extension may slide or shift
  • Direction may become inconsistent
  • Stickies may increase
  • The artist may overwork the placement

The best adhesive is the one that supports the artist’s actual working speed and technique.

Lash Preparation Creates the Bonding Surface

Even the highest-performing adhesive cannot bond properly to lashes covered with makeup residue, facial oils, sunscreen, skincare, perspiration, protein film, or cleanser residue.

If lashes are not completely clean, cleanse first with an oil-free cleanser and then rinse thoroughly with saline. I recommend using fresh cotton swabs during the saline step so the cleanser is fully removed before the natural lash is dehydrated.

The Lashe recommendation: Do not use alcohol-based primers. Cleanse thoroughly, rinse with saline, and dry the lashes completely before application.
